COVID-19 National Day of Observance
March 11th, 2021
Today GreenUP joins all of Canada as we mark March 11 as a National Day of Observance commemorating those who have lost their lives to COVID-19 and those essential workers who have been on the front lines of this pandemic.
Today we also pause to reflect upon how the COVID-19 crisis – like the climate emergency – has emphasized that racism, colonialism, and misogyny remain foundational to power, wealth, and freedom of choice.
Here in Ontario and around the world, COVID-19 infection rates and deaths have disproportionately impacted racialized communities, migrant workers, as well as residents and care givers in long term care homes.
Today, we acknowledge that we cannot fully observe and commemorate the losses of the past year until we have a just and green recovery that builds equitable and resilient societies, improving the well-being of those who have been and continue to be structurally oppressed.
