Daylighting Lost Rivers | returning natural infrastructure to our cities

November 15, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

GreenUP, in partnership with the Trent University M.A. Sustainability Studies Colloquium Series, presents Dr. Jennifer Anne Drake at the Sadlier House Dining Hall on November 15 at 5pm. The colloquium will discuss notable successful examples, challenges, and social and environmental outcomes of restoring urban watercourses.

The development of urban water infrastructure follows a progression that is influenced by social and political factors. Urbanization changes and degrades the natural structure of water systems.

In the past, the environmental services of natural water systems (creeks, streams, river valleys, etc.) were not understood, recognized, or valued by growing urban communities. Consequently, creeks and rivers that flowed through urban centres have been diverted, channelized, and buried. This legacy of buried and lost streams and rivers has created a large number of unintended environmental problems including flooding and sewer overflows.

Today, the environmental services of natural waterways are widely recognized, and in many cities, there are grass-roots movements to restore and ‘daylight’ lost rivers.
