Growing Edible Infrastructure – Planting Parties and Mini Workshops (Sept. 27th)

September 27 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

You are invited to participate in establishing mini food forests in neighbourhood parks and community garden locations!

GreenUp and Nourish, with support from the Community Fruit Group, are hosting four fruit planting and skill sharing events. We invite you to join us!
– Learn about fruit tree care
– Help plant trees and berry bushes
– Volunteer to help tend the mini food forests
– Join our growing group of community members dedicated to fruit projects and learn about how food forests are good for all!

At each location we will be planting five fruit trees (mostly apple varieties), berry bushes, kiwi vines and an assortment of perennials.

We’d love your help!

GreenUP is a proud partner of the Arbor Day Foundation. This project is made possible by partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation and TD Bank.

Program background:

Through the pandemic GreenUP and Nourish have been collaborating on a number of Growing Together While Apart projects where residents gathered virtually to share tips on growing food in small spaces (i.e.microgreens and container gardens), and explore opportunities to plant fruit in public + quasi public spaces. Through the pandemic, the important role access to quality public space plays in our health, and wellbeing was made clear. Through the Growing Edible Infrastructure project, we are able to plant fruit trees and berry bushes (which is always a good thing), and hope to build community through inviting people to participate in public spaces in new and nurturing ways.

GreenUP received a Green Space Grant from TD Bank Group (TD) and the Arbor Day Foundation to support innovative urban greening and tree planting projects. Peterborough is one of just 20 U.S. and Canadian cities selected to receive this grant in 2022.

Through this project, GreenUP and Nourish will work with neighbourhood residents to establish five neighbourhood based mini- food forests and continue to support community capacity to learn about and care for fruit within urban spaces.

Food forests are interactive spaces. Trees and shrubs respond to care such as watering, feeding, pruning and picking. Along with establishing five mini food forests, the project has supported a group of dedicated volunteers in becoming certified in Beginner Fruit Tree Care. Using a train-the-trainer model, this team of trained volunteers and organization staff will share their knowledge and expertise with others who sign up to help care for the mini food forests in each neighbourhood.
