Eastern Hemlock

This shade-tolerant native evergreen prefers moist, well-drained soil and protection from the wind.  Hemlock is a long-lived tree that can reach 900 years in age . The wood is of little commercial value but the bark was formerly used as a source of tannin for the leather industry.
