Nourish
Nourish is all about food. Nourish is a collaborative partnership between GreenUP, YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, Peterborough Public Health and COIN. Our work cultivates health, builds community, and promotes fairness through innovative programs dedicated to eating, cooking, growing, and advocating for good food.
In 2016, the Peterborough Community Garden Network (PCGN) was integrated under the umbrella of Nourish. This allows our collaborative to reach a large network of growers, and local food producers, and to connect them to innovative programming. Interested community members can connect with us to establish a new community garden, expand the size or impact of a community garden, get connected to a space to grow, and share knowledge to learn more about seed saving and eating, cooking, and preserving the bounty grown in their gardens.
Program History
In 2011, building on the rich history of community gardens in this community, the Peterborough Community Garden Network (PCGN) established a formal collaboration between GreenUP, YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, Peterborough City-County Health Unit, and Fleming College. Since then, the PCGN worked with many facets of our community to increase the number of local community gardeners and available garden space.
The number of gardens has grown from eleven in 2010 to a current total of forty-three. We have seen that community gardens are about much more than just growing food. These spaces provide tools for individuals and families to grow their own fresh healthy produce, green previously underused areas, get to know and interact with their neighbours, and work together to enhance the communities in which they live.
