The Shift You Want
2021 brings a new logo, a new webpage, and new workshops – all of this is the same Shifting Gears you’ve known for years. We are always here to help you shift in ways that work for your life circumstances.
Each year, Shifting Gears challenges Peterborough to adopt active and sustainable transportation habits for one of the most common daily trips – the trip to work.
The program provides workplaces and individuals with resources, community, and equipment to motivate, support, and sustain a shift to walking, cycling, transit, telecommuting, e-work, and more!
We know that the trip to work does not happen in isolation. It may be chained with a trip to pick up kids from school or to visit the gym in the morning, and the trip to work can definitely influence the other regular trips we make through the week.
Therefore, Shifting Gears and its offerings are often developed to addresses transportation behaviour choices more broadly with a holistic view of how to make the shift work for you, your employer, and your other life commitments.
This past year has been full of changes to the way we work and travel, much of which has felt out of our control. This spring, take a little control back! Let’s look at what’s working and what’s not, and make some tweaks to help you find more balance, more joy, more activity, more ease, and more connection in your commute and work life.

The first Shifting Gears Challenge took place in 2004. This challenge, with funding from Transport Canada’s ecoMOBILITY program, grew substantially between 2008 and 2011, increasing participant numbers four-fold. The program is among the most successful transportation demand management programs ever implemented in the city of Peterborough, and has helped to incentivize a transition to sustainable modes of transportation for thousands of local commuters. After a decade of focusing on workplaces and commuters, the program grew in 2015 into the Community Shifting Gears Challenge. The new challenge is open to all Peterborough citizens who want to shift towards walking, biking, and taking transit for daily trips to work, school, the store, an appointment, and elsewhere.
