During the month of May, hundreds of workplaces and community members participate in Peterborough’s annual transportation challenge, Shifting Gears.
In the challenge, you can track your trips – to work, school, the store, an appointment, a soccer practice, or other places you travel to regularly through the month. You will be able to easily see how you and your workplace are traveling each week and how you are moving towards your goals.
Throughout the month you will receive tips, tutorials, and lots of encouragement from the Shifting Gears community, on our website and social media, from weekly e-newsletters, and in workshops offered by GreenUP, B!KE, the City of Peterborough, and other community partners.
By walking, cycling, riding transit, carpooling, and telecommuting a bit more frequently, you can improve your health and the health of our environment – and, during the month of May, WIN PRIZES! Did I forget to mention prizes? By tracking your trips you become eligible for weekly prizes, workplace prizes, school prizes and more!

The first Shifting Gears Challenge took place in 2004. This challenge, with funding from Transport Canada’s ecoMOBILITY program, grew substantially between 2008 and 2011, increasing participant numbers four-fold. The program is among the most successful transportation demand management programs ever implemented in the city of Peterborough, and has helped to incentivize a transition to sustainable modes of transportation for thousands of local commuters. After a decade of focusing on workplaces and commuters, the program grew in 2015 into the Community Shifting Gears Challenge. The new challenge is open to all Peterborough citizens who want to shift towards walking, biking, and taking transit for daily trips to work, school, the store, an appointment, and elsewhere.
