Repair Cafe
July 28th, 2014
Repair Cafe? A new term for many, Repair Cafes have been steadily popping up all over the world–including right here in the Kawarthas. At GreenUP, we are concerned about what ends up in the trash – not just how much is ending up in the landfill, but also what items are being tossed. REpair and REpurpose, seem like a couple ‘R’s that could be added to the equation when we consider the life cycle of the items we own.
Visitors bring their broken items from home. Together with the specialists they start making their repairs in the Repair Café. We learn and fix together. If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Or you can lend a hand with another repair job. You can also get inspired at the reading table – by leafing through books on repairs and DIY.
At GreenUP, we are concerned about what ends up in the trash – not just how much is ending up in the landfill, but also what items are being tossed. REpair and REpurpose, seem like a couple ‘R’s that could be added to the equation when we consider the life cycle of the items we own. Repair Café’s help to extend the life of a few of items, while offering a space for connecting with others and learning new skills. That sounds pretty great to us. We hope you think so too!
Ways to get involved with Repair Cafe:
+ Be a part of the organizing committee – Would you like to help with promotion, finding fixers, or sourcing supplies?
+ Become a volunteer fixer – Can you repair a lamp, fix a necklace, darn a sweater, troubleshoot computer problems?
+ Bring an item to be fixed
The next Repair Cafe is Monday, July 28th at the Silver Bean Cafe. Join us from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
